Origins Safaris are extremely pleased to share the news that the Republic of Chad and African Parks announced on Monday 19th of February the signing of an agreement to manage and restore Ennedi Natural and Cultural Reserve, a World Heritage Site situated in the north-east of the country.
An oasis of life in the Sahara, the 40,000 km2 vast reserve is a desert landscape of extremely rich cultural heritage, with records of human presence dating back over 10,000 years. It is uniquely characterised by immense rock arches, pillars, gorges, plateaus, and canyons that harbor permanent water sources creating a unique desert ecosystem. A relic population of crocodiles, over 525 species of flora and at least 199 bird species which pass through on their transcontinental migratory routes are present in this landscape. It also harbours one of the largest and most significant rock art collections signifying the importance humans have played here over millennia.
On the heels of the announcement of the expanded Greater Zakouma Ecosystem made in October last year, Ennedi represents another extraordinary commitment by the government of Chad to the long-term protection of its wild landscapes. It is also the fourteenth park on the continent to come under the management of the conservation organisation African Parks, expanding their footprint to over 10 million hectares – the largest amount of area under conservation management for any one NGO in Africa.
This agreement would not be possible without the generous support of African Parks’ funding partners. The European Union has committed €4,7M, and it was just announced at their Annual Goed Geld Gala that the Dutch Postcode Lottery has also committed €3M for the management of the reserve.
Under this new agreement, the Republic of Chad and African Parks are committed to the full restoration and long-term protection of Ennedi and will engage and integrate local people in the conservation of the reserve. Management priorities include the development of needed infrastructure, initiating important law enforcement and conservation activities, including key species re-introductions, and improving tourism to bring needed revenue to the region. Together with the Government and their partners they aim to secure a future for this globally important natural and cultural World Heritage Site, for the benefit of the ecosystem and the thousands of people who rely on this reserve.
Safaris to the Ennedi
Rising from the sands of the great Sahara Desert, the Ennedi Plateau is a revelation. Situated in the north east of Chad and surrounded by sand on all sides, this extraordinary, other-worldly place presents vista after vista of stunning rock formations.
The Ennedi desert is an adventure through remote and breathtaking landscapes that sums up our ethos, and takes you to places that few western travellers have ever been. This part of the Sahara offers a vast collection of sandstone mountains sculpted by the wind and sand over millennia into stunning rock formations and arches. Here, you can enter the land of the Tubu; one of Africa’s most traditional and least known people, who live amongst a myriad of petroglyphs and rock paintings from generations before. Then we walk into the Guelta d’Archei where the Tubu bring huge herds of camels to drink at the only waterhole for miles around, in the company of one of the last populations of Saharan crocodiles, which we hope to see.
Chad is one of the most exciting countries in all of Africa, an utterly wild and untamed land brimming with opportunities for adventure. The most remote and least visited country in the Sahara, Chad is home to dramatic landscapes and people that rarely see western visitors – an intoxicating combination.
