UPDATE ON E-VISA
IMPORTANT UPDATE – “The Government of Kenya as of 8th September, 2015 has reinstated manual visa application to run concurrently with online E-Visa System,” President Uhuru Kenyatta in a separate statement said although the e-visa system is already running, manual applications at the country’s entry points would continue concurrently so as not to bar last-minute visitors to the country. He said there has been challenges faced by visitors to the country in the electronic entry visa system. “We have had a number of challenges on the implementation of the e-visa and I have therefore ordered that (applications for visas) on arrival to the country continues”.
Inevitably the on-line application will become mandatory in due course (maybe without or at short notice), so we encourage people to use the on-line method as a preference anyway, and only use the “on arrival manual system” when forced to do so. Apply on-line at: https://account.ecitizen.go.ke/visitor-registration
Be Prepared: The single biggest piece of advice to give anybody is to have everything ready before you start. Download our “Be Prepared Visa Guidelines” from our resource centre. Please let us know if you have lost that link.
Website: There are some web browsers (Internet Explorer being one of them) that for one reason or another seem to be experiencing problems with the E-Visa portal. We recommend that one uses Google Chrome which has been found to be quite effective. The E-Visa Portal is now mobile enabled and one can complete the application from a mobile phone or ipad – including taking and uploading pictures.
Speed of Approval: REMEMBER The 90-Day Visa Validity commences from the date of E-Visa approval … not of one’s arrival into Kenya. Visitors are therefore urged not to apply too early. Approval on average is only taking between 12 – 24hours. The official timeline given is however now about 48hours.
Invitation Letter: Tourists can also upload your tour itinerary as an alternative to an “invitation letter”.
Multiple Entry: The Single Entry Visa to Kenya allows for free re-entry to Kenya as long as one is travelling within the EAC countries (Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania). For visitors requiring to enter Kenya twice from outside East Africa (i.e Ethiopia, South Africa etc), a facility to apply for “double entry” (not the multiple visa) will be added to the E-Visa website. The Single EAC Tourist Visa allowing travel to Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda is not available online. This can only be applied for and issued on arrival in Entebbe or Kigali or JKIA. JKIA !!!! Yes a big loophole that JKIA apparently issues the single EAC visa on arrival. We believe this loophole will be closed anyday, and that the EAC visa will also go online – but it needs agreement of other states so will take a little time. Alas Tanzania does not accept the The Single EAC Tourist Visa – maybe under a newly elected government in Tanzania that will change.
Payment: The E-Visa system accepts Debit, Credit or Pre-Paid Cards.
Language: There has been a challenge with language as the website is currently only offered in English. Additional languages shall be added as soon as practicable.
Application by Agents/Tour Operators: Tour Operators can now register as “Agents” and can apply for their clients from time to time using a single company email address. The E-Visa approval will come to that address but in the visitor’s name for you to forward onto them.
Support: There is a Tour Operators Association team that is keeping in close contact with Immigration authorities and this team is able to help address any unresolved issues that may arise. We are requested to immediately forward any concerns regarding visitor’s inability to apply for the E-Visa as The Director of Immigration has expressed his resolve to make the E-Visa work and called for support from users. He has reiterated his department’s commitment to dealing with any challenges as and when they are identified and urged users to communicate any concerns they may still have. The Director confirmed that he sees all emails written to support@ecitizen.go.ke and every effort will be made to respond to issues as they arise.
For a limited period of a further 60 Days (September and October 2015), there shall be E-Visa Terminals inside the arrivals terminal at both JKIA and MIA. These will allow any visitor arriving without a Visa to apply for the E-Visa on arrival and receive real time approval. This will only be for nationals previously allowed to get a visa on arrival. The downside of this is that there will be a longer delay to enter the country while the Visa is applied for and approved.
At this point in time the airlines have been instructed that they should NOT deny boarding to a traveller on account of lack of the E-Visa – unless such persons are from nationalities required to have the Visa before coming to Kenya. This would be an exception to the rule, and visitors are however encouraged to apply for the E-Visa to avoid unnecessary delays and frustrations.
