Nyungwe Forest
Nyungwe Forest daily scheduled flights to/from Kigali are back:
Dept Kigali 1320 hrs, Arr Kamembe 1355 hrs
Dept Kamembe 1355 hrs, Arr Kigali 1420 hrs
Kamembe is about an hour drive from Nyungwe Forest Lodge, so great timings, as it allows one to arrive in Kigali in the morning, and fly to Nyungwe the same afternoon. See flip-book itinerary for our signature safari “Rwanda, Land of a Thousand Hills”. Net cost for the 9 day sample programme listed on the last page, is less than US$ 6500 per person sharing, for 2 pax, or US$ 5500 pps for 4 pax. (fully inclusive of 1 chimp and 2 gorilla trekking permits and 2 spectacular boat rides on Lakes Kivu and Ihema respectively). Great value.
Nyiragongo Volcano
The world’s most active volcano (Nyiragongo) continues to rumble! 1 night extensions to climb the spectacular Nyiragongo Volcano across the border from Gisenyi are now back on the menu, as the security situation in Eastern Congo seems to improve. As a guideline, 1 night added onto a gorilla trip is about +US$ 825 per pax (based 4), all inclusive – that’s cheaper than a third gorilla trek!
Akagera National Park
Don’t write off Akagera – it’s really quite lovely. The wildlife is surprisingly plentiful. Shoebill, “the biggest tick” in ornithology” is occasionally seen, and the Ruzizi Lodge has all the charm and comforts of the “traditional off the beaten track safari lodge”. As I write, today – the amazing African Parks Network are re-introducing lion to the park (they went regionally extinct during the 1994 genocide). We believe black rhino will follow sometime in the future. Akagera, is only a 2 hour drive from the Kigali Airport – so sleep in Akagera and drive straight to the airport for your onward flight (or fly in style in the luxurious presidential chopper).
Chimps of Mahale
Nyungwe Forest is great for primates in general – namely chimps, L’hoest Monkey and Angola colobus, but frankly nowhere on the planet compares to “The Mahale Mountains” for absolutely idyllic chimpanzee viewing to compare with that of mountain gorillas. We have some amazingly affordable 3 & 4 nights in Mahale as a perfect add on to any Rwandan gorilla programme.
