The effort to eliminate plastic bags is becoming unstoppable. Following over 60 countries across the globe in the war against plastic pollution, the government of the United Republic of Tanzania announced the ban on all plastic carrier bags effective from the first of June this Year.
“All plastic carrier bags, regardless of their thickness will be prohibited from being imported, exported, manufactured, sold, stored, supplied and used in mainland Tanzania”, read part of the statement from the Office of the Vice President of Tanzania.
Though the exceptions to the new rule for medical, industrial, constructional, agricultural, and waste management packaging, as well as small “ziploc” bags used to carry toiletries (as long as they leave the country when the visitors do) will be implemented.
In support of the Tanzanian government’s environmental law, we would like to notify all our guests, partners and supporters that any travellers entering the country refrain from using any and all forms of ‘disposable’ plastic carry bags. This would include plastic being found in both the guest’s main luggage as well as hand luggage.
In addition, please kindly note that when guests purchase duty free goods before entering Tanzania, they will be required to leave their duty free plastic carry bags at the port of entry. A special desk will be designated at all entry points.
